more trees Exhibition Opens at Roppongi Axis Building!
Roppongi is now filled with the scent of wood—this is thanks to the "more trees Exhibition: 12 Days of Experiencing the Forest," held from Wednesday, October 27th to Sunday, November 7th. The exhibition, with Axis Gallery on the 4th floor as its main venue and displays spread across floors down to the basement, offers a chance to enjoy a variety of creations, including new products from more trees, an installation by artist Yasuhiro Suzuki, and photographic works. A reception party was also held on the 26th (Tuesday), the day before the opening, attended by hundreds of industry professionals and guests.

An Exhibition of "Forest" in the City
Wood, a gift from the forest, has arrived in Roppongi as products, installations, and photographic frames. The venue is the Roppongi Axis Building. The event was conceived this past spring when more trees approached Axis about the possibility of holding a new product launch event for wood-based items, coinciding with "DESIGN TIDE TOKYO 2010," which was set to begin on October 30th.
Over the past few decades, the way wood is used in Japan has changed. Woods like cypress and cedar, which have supported Japanese culture through their use in homes and furniture, no longer fit the rapidly changing lifestyles brought about by high economic growth.
Coinciding with this period, the liberalization of timber trade allowed for the import of high-quality wood for furniture and interior items in large quantities and at low prices. This led to a continuous decline in domestic timber self-sufficiency, which stood at around 28 percent in 2010. more trees, established in 2007, has been working to curb this trend through forest conservation efforts, the development of original products using domestic timber, and initiatives like the "TOUCH WOOD Exhibition," which connects forests and art to promote thinning.
This event is the largest ever among those organized by more trees. Axis Gallery, which handled the overall venue design, was committed to conveying the "more trees" message throughout the entire building. On the 4th floor, an impressive display of 200 sets of "Stick Mobiles" made from domestic cedar, a new product from more trees, creates a striking visual. They also produce a beautiful sound when they gently collide.
In the basement, Yasuhiro Suzuki's installation features countless "Kanji Trees" made of wood suspended in the air.
Each piece is handmade and unique, making them endlessly fascinating to observe. Furthermore, in the 1st-floor courtyard, a giant "transparent tree", over ten meters tall, rises from a bed of cypress chips. This is also a work by Suzuki, titled "Air Forest." Four balloons, designed to resemble cedar trees, are displayed, creating shifting perceptions of distance, scale, and reflections depending on the viewer's perspective.

more trees' Challenge
The new products presented by more trees on the 4th floor are also unique! The concept is "Play the Living." Around ten new items are showcased on a circular wooden table, including the "Apple Kendama" made from domestic timber, the "Cutting Board" featuring Japanese mountain silhouettes crafted from different wood species, the "Sunlight" wooden lampshade, and the "Emerald Bracelet" made of cypress.
The venue also features a comprehensive display of products previously released by more trees. Another highlight of this event is the "TOUCH WOOD Exhibition" held in the "Symposia" space at Axis Gallery in the basement. Art photographs by 20 renowned photographers are available for purchase at exceptional prices of ¥50,000 and ¥100,000, with 20-40% of the proceeds donated to more trees' forest conservation activities. A spokesperson for more trees noted that the lineup and pricing were made possible by the charitable nature of this initiative, emphasizing the quality of the printing techniques and artistic value.
As of the reception and the first day, 50 pieces have already sold out. The frames, made from domestic cypress wood to display the photographs, are simple yet beautiful, leaving a profound impression on viewers.
An Exhibition to Fully Experience the "Forest"
Attendees at the reception were reportedly amazed by the wonderful scent of wood. This initiative not only provides an understanding of the current state of Japan's forests but also offers an opportunity to engage with and even purchase works by leading designers and photographers. Products are available for purchase at "LIVING MOTIF" in the basement (some new products available), while photographs can be bought directly at the exhibition venue. The exhibition runs until Sunday, November 7th. When visiting Roppongi, be sure to stop by Axis and fully immerse yourself in this "forest that has appeared in the city."
