Ibiza's Unique Creations, Found Nowhere Else (1)

Guidebooks only scratch the surface of Ibiza. The more you discover this island, the deeper its allure becomes, particularly the distinct personalities of its residents and their unique creative expressions. This time, Yoshie Hirayama, who has lived on Ibiza for over a decade and works as its sole Japanese coordinator, will introduce us to Ibiza's distinctive creativity, including behind-the-scenes stories that short-term visitors might miss.

The Diverse Faces of Ibiza

What comes to mind when you think of Ibiza? Beaches, sunsets, clubbing, hippies, chillout, healing, art, music – a multitude of images flood the imagination. Perhaps this multifaceted nature is precisely Ibiza's charm.

My first impression when I visited this island to see a friend over a decade ago was "magic." The unique human stories emanating from the residents, the delicate beauty found in each region, and the pure, crisp air of nature's embrace!

Even now, I am completely captivated by the gentle rhythm that envelops you, as if you're under a spell wherever you go. While the island's atmosphere has changed considerably in recent years due to intensified tourism and land development, the blessings of its slow, tranquil flow of time are undeniable. Ibiza also serves as a meeting point where travelers from all over the world can connect without regard for skin color, and a night out promises many encounters. Locals, in particular, are often kind and friendly, making it easy to enjoy your trip without feeling any pressure.

What I've come to appreciate and feel deeply living on this island is that the notion that 'living an elegant and sophisticated life requires material wealth' simply doesn't hold true here. While it's true that Ibiza has gained a luxurious image recently, its fundamental simplicity and unpretentiousness are its greatest charms. Many people live on this island with a profound philosophy that allows them to coexist with its essence. This is the true 'hippie spirit' that has drawn so much attention to Ibiza, and it has played a significant role in its journey to becoming the popular destination it is today.

This time, I'll introduce you to some hot artists active on Ibiza and a famous open-air market that is indispensable to the history of the hippie movement.

Must-Visit Cultural Spots on Ibiza

Located in the northeast of the island, the hippie market "LAS DALIAS" is an unmissable tourist attraction. Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, this vibrant and diverse market retains the charm of the good old days and is a truly special place for relaxation. Everything sold here is a one-of-a-kind original item, available only at this location. With a chill-out lounge, bar, restaurant, and even puppet shows for children, it's a place families can explore with peace of mind.

Mora, a knit designer who exhibits at this market, was a muse of the island during the golden hippie era of the late 60s and 70s, captured by the lenses of numerous renowned photographers. Even now, she continues to model, and her visual presence is utterly captivating to me as a woman. I also have a stall here, so please feel free to say hello if you visit the hippie market!

Noam Ofir, originally from Israel, is one of the most talked-about emerging photographers. He currently works as the exclusive photographer for 'Pacha magazine.' His lens captures Ibiza with an edge that seems to satirize something. He holds solo exhibitions every year, so I highly recommend visiting if you have the chance.

To Free the Audience from Everyday Life!

Performer artist Lizzy Bauer
http://www.phoenixartproductions.com/

Lizzy Bauer, originally from Germany, is a popular performer artist in high demand for restaurants and events. Her dynamic shows, exuding both allure and grace, are incredibly impactful! While there's an eroticism that hints at fetishism, and performances involving the skillful manipulation of fire, her prowess as a performer is undeniable. When she sheds her costume and reveals her true self, she's completely different from her stage persona, with a gentle demeanor and an endearing smile. I had the chance to interview her.

— Please introduce yourself.

LizzyI'm half Austrian and half German, and I grew up in Munich, Germany. I studied ballet for many years from a young age. Fortunately, my uncle was the fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, so I was closely connected to the fashion world, which I believe is where my current aesthetic for performance originated. My aesthetic is very simple: 'Always be elegant.'

I started performing when I first came to Ibiza in 2003. My first show was at an event in Las Dalias, a simple fire performance, but I designed and directed all the costumes myself. That winter, I began selling my own costumes and clothes at the market, starting my career as a fashion designer. In 2005, I opened my own shop, 'ZOE-FASHION-IBIZA,' in Ibiza Town, which I produced entirely myself. While this venture was very successful, I realized at the same time that I was drifting away from my identity as a performer. To establish myself as a performer, where I felt most free and true to myself, I reluctantly closed the shop in 2008.

Shortly after, I met Max Flame, with whom I now form a unit, and thus 'PHOENIX ART PRODUCTIONS' was born. With her, I can do anything creatively and crazy, and we inspire each other through art. Thanks to this, my activities are expanding, with Ibiza as my base, and now including mainland Spain, Bangkok, Bali, Germany, and Los Angeles. Of course, if I receive an offer from Japan, I would love to visit!

— Where does the passion that drives your performances come from?

I have different passions for each show. But what I can say is common is that I have an established aesthetic. Based on this philosophy of aesthetics, I always want to deliver cutting-edge, captivating, and shocking performances. Another goal is to 'free the audience from their everyday lives.' A show is where everything is permitted as art, things that are impossible in daily life. Anything crazy is possible because you are an artist.

— Do you have any icons?

I don't have any 'icons' in that sense. I simply admire pure, creative beauty. I deeply cherish artists who can change the world through their art.

— Finally, what does Ibiza mean to you?

For me, Ibiza is a heartwarming 'home.' I was captivated the moment I first set foot on this island. I've traveled all over the world, but there aren't many places where I feel so genuinely myself. Perhaps it's because, no matter how crazy I might be, there are far crazier things here, allowing me to reset myself. My house is far from neighbors, so I can spend the entire day naked in nature. It's a very stress-free place. And fortunately, the island's goddess is on my side, always guiding things in a positive direction!

— Thank you.
