Gucci's Iconic "Flora" Transforms Infinitely
In 1966, Gucci designed the botanical pattern "Flora," featuring flowers, plants, and insects, at the request of Princess Grace of Monaco. A special silk scarf was created as a gift for her. In 2005, then Accessories Creative Director Frida Giannini revived "Flora" for the Cruise Collection bags, reintroducing this iconic pattern with a contemporary interpretation and achieving great success. It continues to be incorporated into numerous items today, known as an eternal symbol of the brand.
teamLab has created an installation inspired by this iconic "Flora." Within a darkened space filled with ethereal music, a massive screen, 2.6 meters high and 24 meters wide, endlessly displays images of beautiful flowers. This work, developed over approximately four months, is an interactive media art piece where the flowers' movements change when viewers touch the screen, which functions as a touch panel. The piece expresses the cycle of life and death through the blooming, scattering, and re-sprouting of flowers, which continuously transform infinitely. The charm of this work lies in the unique experience of witnessing a scene that never repeats and responding to your own gestures.
Regarding the work, Toshiyuki Inoko commented, "Inspired by Gucci's beautiful traditional motif, 'Flora,' I wanted to create something where the flower patterns within the work would continue eternally. I want to convey to viewers that life itself, encompassing all things including the negative, is beautiful."
