Riko Takahashi: 004 The Act of Adornment

# 004 Wearing. The Act of.

While I sometimes wonder if it's odd that a fashion section keeps returning to the topic of kimonos, I love kimonos and Western clothing equally, and find it more difficult to see them as separate entities. Thus, the topic remains kimonos.

Takahashi Hiroko Exhibition "transform" Now Open!

There are many ways to perceive a kimono, and much can be conveyed through it. Of course, unless one actively seeks to feel something, it remains merely an ethnic garment far removed from daily life, or simply a troublesome piece of clothing to wear.
The phrase "troublesome to put on" is often associated with kimonos. Indeed, lacking functional fasteners like buttons or zippers found in Western clothing, they take time to wear. To me, the difference between Western clothes and kimonos is akin to the difference between instant ramen and nikujaga (a Japanese stew). Instant ramen is quick and delicious. Nikujaga, on the other hand, requires preparing ingredients, adding various seasonings, and adjusting the taste as you cook.
The more I think about it, the more dressing a kimono resembles the enjoyment of cooking. If you can enjoy the process, the word "troublesome" never comes up. It's about experiencing each action, contemplating its meaning, and enjoying it. Perhaps this is essential in all aspects of daily life. Kimonos have taught me this, too.
Being bound by fixed ideas can prevent us from discovering joy. Here's one way to shift the perception from "troublesome to put on" to "interesting to put on."

My goal is not simply to create beautiful kimonos to be worn, but rather to consider how to express what can be conveyed through kimonos, using those very kimonos.
A new approach to kimonos. Titled "transform," this exhibition presents photographic works that incorporate the kimonos I've created as elements within the artwork. I hope you will view the various aspects glimpsed in the process of dressing a kimono from multiple perspectives.
