Capturing the Mysterious Aura of Nature
Mark Borthwick, a photographer, filmmaker, and musician, was born in London. He gained recognition in the 90s for his avant-garde fashion photography, working with magazines like Purple. More recently, he has collaborated with artists such as Mike Mills, Sean Marshall, and Chloë Sevigny, and presented installations blending drawing and text. He is currently based in Brooklyn, New York.
MYKITA and Mark Borthwick have been collaborating for six years. For this project, friends, family, and models gathered on Lanzarote, a volcanic island surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Borthwick, a minimalist and a dreamer, captured the unconventional natural landscapes.
The desolate island, with its moon-like terrain, black beaches, rugged cliffs, and peculiar salt-tolerant plants, creates a unique scene imbued with a mysterious atmosphere. All photographs were taken with a Leica analog camera that Borthwick has cherished for 25 years. The prism effect, achieved through overexposure of the film, is characteristic of his distinctive style.
MYKITA is publishing these photographs in an art edition photo book. Limited to a total of 99 copies, with 33 sets each from three different photo series, each book comes signed and numbered by the artist.
