Honored for Significant Contributions to Culture and Fashion in the UK and Abroad

The Royal College of Art's honorary degree is bestowed by the university to recognize outstanding achievements of the year from individuals who have made significant contributions in fields such as fine art, design, fashion, textiles, applied arts, humanities, and philanthropy.

Alber Elbaz received this honor in recognition of his substantial contributions to the culture and fashion industries both within the UK and internationally. This year, the award was also presented to Paola Antonelli, design curator at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and the British artist Grayson Perry.

Born in Casablanca in 1961, fashion designer Alber Elbaz studied engineering and design at Shenkar College in Israel. He moved to New York in 1992, where he spent four years as the right-hand man to the legendary American designer Geoffrey Beene. In 1996, Elbaz moved to Paris to become head designer at Guy Laroche. He then served as artistic director at Yves Saint Laurent before taking on the role of artistic director at Lanvin in 2001. He has received the International Fashion Award from the CFDA, been made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur, and was named one of TIME magazine's '100 Most Influential People'.
