Focus on Styling That Layers Asymmetry
London is buzzing. More young designers are debuting their collections, and the city and its shops feel alive. For this reason, TOGA is moving its presentation from Paris to London this season. The Autumn/Winter 2014 presentation took place in a space not far from the official venue, Tate Gallery.
“The theme is functional clothing, treated with toughness and a rough edge,” says designer Yasuko Furuta. A clerical shirt paired with a trapezoid skirt. Layered over this are a bustier and half-pants. While each item is familiar, the coordination with PVC and transparent materials creates a distinctly modern feel. The Portuguese men's shoes worn with socks are so popular they have dedicated corners at Harvey Nichols and Selfridges.
Meanwhile, sacai, under designer Chitose Abe, has firmly established itself in Paris. The collection is powerful, integrating not only combinations of knit and woven fabrics but also fur, leather, and quilting. Gentle, flowing flared and asymmetrical pleated skirts are paired with voluminous outerwear. Alongside classic materials like glen plaid and windowpane checks, the nomadic-style jacquard cape and blouson feel refreshingly new.
