♯016 HIROKO TAKAHASHI Exhibition "effect"
The exhibition "effect," which began on October 15 and runs until November 18 (Fri.), is being held at the Yokohama University of Art and Design Gallery. It is an installation centered around portraits, larger than life-size, set within a large white space filled with natural light.

What Kimono Means to Me──
While kimono, as traditional Japanese attire, should be familiar to Japanese people, there is a great deal of disinterest, misconceptions, and prejudices surrounding them, born from a lack of understanding.
It feels as though Japanese people view their own cultural items as something special, creating a barrier and pushing them away. To accept one's own country's things and ways naturally and as a matter of course is the first step toward looking at the world with an unbiased, flat perspective.

For me, kimono are an effective medium for liberating people from nearby preconceptions and fixed ideas. This space, filled with portraits adorned in them, is a device for contemplation.
