The Magic of 3D Materials That Capture Light!
The Spring/Summer 2012 season looks set to feature many 3D materials that create shadows by reflecting light. Examples include accordion pleats and fabrics folded like origami. White fabrics repel and absorb light. As the body moves, the pleats open, and when still, they create a silhouette with depth. These are light garments that change their expression with light, making you want to swing.
Chloé made abundant use of pleated details. The peaks of the accordion pleats flowing from the bust were hand-painted with color prints. When the striped fabric is folded freely vertically and horizontally, it transforms like a kaleidoscope with movement. Bags also appeared in accordion-like styles, with clutches and shoulder bags that layered and expanded multiple times.
Alongside pleats, lace is another fabric that caught my eye. Prada presented Swiss-made chemical lace. The garments, with their layered petals, resemble flowers in varying colors. From swimsuits to dresses and coats, the lace coordinates are not overly sweet, offering punchy silhouettes. Car motifs were also printed, with pleats folded to create a sense of three-dimensionality. Lace clutch bags are also an item to watch.
