The Art of Couture Hidden in Long, Lean Silhouettes!

The Art of Draping, Invisible at First Glance
Emerging from the Spring/Summer 2013 Milan and Paris collections were simple, straight-cut lines. Minimalism dresses, devoid of darts or seams, also echoed a kimono style. These straight lines, however, concealed sophisticated couture techniques. Fabric was cut on the bias, with side seams shifted to drape elegantly over the body—a form of three-dimensional cutting that appears flat.
Lanvin's collection featured a palette of bicolors, presenting tailored suits and asymmetrical dresses. The brand's signature ribbons served as obi-like sashes, reminiscent of the collars on traditional kimonos. The perfume bottle bag added a charming touch.
Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci presented a starkly elegant collection in aqua blue, white, black, and nude. Ruffles placed within the straight lines added a touch of grace. The rounded shoulders and puffed sleeves evoked the silhouette of traditional samurai armor, known as 'kamishimo'.
It seems Japonisme will be the secret theme for Spring/Summer 2013.
