Shinichiro Nakahara on the Art of Gifting

Shinichiro Nakahara is a name synonymous with curated spaces and thoughtful projects, from the furniture store "Playmountain" to the cafe "Tas Yard." With a schedule that sees him traveling abroad for half the month, we asked Nakahara about his approach to selecting gifts from his unique vantage point.

Beyond Objects, Experiences

I travel quite a bit myself, and many people visit from overseas – editors, writers, designers, people in the food industry, and more. I often receive works from artists. I also get gifts like freshly made chili sauce from produce grown in my own garden. Recently, at a desert wedding, the guests were given a thoughtful set that included a map of the venue and sunscreen, which I found to be a rather interesting gift.

When it comes to people visiting from abroad, I try to give them gifts that are not just objects, but rather an experience – taking them somewhere so they can "remember the scenery." In today's world, experiences tied to objects are truly irreplaceable.

Gifting Enduring Values

Looking at Margaret Howell's household goods, you can sense Margaret's personal touch, as if she's chosen items she genuinely uses and loves. They possess a strong sense of practicality and reflect a person with enduring values.

Each item conveys a sense of pleasure in its use. The colors and textures evoke the same feeling as Margaret Howell's knitwear.

She also masterfully blends machine-made and handcrafted items. The careful selection process, which makes the giver truly ponder, is exceptional.

Gifting Scenery Tied to Objects

As we mature, our circle of close relationships tends to narrow compared to our younger years, and gift-giving shifts from price to a clearer intention of 'what I want to give this specific person.' For example, we might travel together or visit a place, sharing time and creating a space for shared experience and empathy to remember it by.

It's not just about giving a sweater; the context in which it's given allows the recipient to recall that moment unexpectedly. The ability to create a story and scenery connected to an object is a mark of adulthood.
