Hemp Cloth: Restoring a Japanese Standard Fabric

Hemp cloth, known as "Majotae," uses threads that have been used in Japan since ancient times. However, after World War II, domestic cultivation was restricted, and hemp fibers were deemed unsuitable for spinning. This led to a failure to industrialize, and today, it is no longer generally available.

Majotae is a fabric brand that has revived this "cloth that Japanese people have forgotten" using harmless hemp raw materials.

Pas de Calais, in collaboration with Isetan, has recreated this traditional fabric, essential to Japanese life for 10,000 years, by bringing together modern technology. With the goal of making it "a Japanese standard fabric once again," this pop-up shop offers a total of five items: dresses, pants, and coats.

Items Born from the Convergence of Makers' and Materials' Sentiments

Compared to cotton, hemp fabric offers superior quick-drying properties, high heat retention, and strong fibers resistant to pulling. Furthermore, it softens and conforms with repeated use.

Pas de Calais leverages these characteristics of Majotae, pursuing not only comfort but also simple designs that are easy to incorporate into styling. To this, they add the meticulous details characteristic of pas de calais, such as hand stitching, chiffon, cutting techniques, unique components, and patterns.
