Terumi Hagiwara's Series Vol. 133 | Gucci and Prada Showcase Brand Power

Layered for a Lighter Look

Gucci and Prada Showcase Their Brand Power

This is the Milan Women's Ready-to-Wear Spring/Summer 2016 collection. Spring/Summer 2016 is about lightness and transparency... but these themes appear every season, don't they? However, next spring is a little different. The point isn't wearing sheer fabrics, but rather what you wear underneath and what you choose to reveal. It's about creating new looks through layering. This is a style that enjoys the gradients of color and textures that change with layering. The technique is to incorporate details and layer them in a way that still appears simple. It's a subtle art.

Gucci's New Frontier, Forged by Michele

Designers often try to express the duality of women, such as sweetness and sharpness, or gentleness and strength. However, in the Spring/Summer collection, not just two, but three or four facets of a woman were styled.

Gucci moved away from the hotel venues used by past designers, choosing a bright space filled with natural light. The designer was Alessandro Michele, who was appointed last season. The stage was carpeted with a vibrant mix of pop flowers and snakes, with graphical partitions arranged throughout.

Conscious lace dresses are paired with sporty zip-ups and accented with the brand's iconic ribbed belt. Trompe-l'oeil is layered with 3D embroidery, and a snake motif emerges on the back of a lace knit. The key is the complex combination of meticulously crafted elements.

Prada's Simplicity, Playing with Mixed Materials

Prada presented suits in alternating white, black, and checks, trimmed and finished with tulle lace capes. Graphical knit jumpsuits were layered with organza tunics, and the epaulets were adorned with bijoux. The combination of different materials like astrakhan, suede, and patent leather, which appear to be simple stripes, were also used in the bags and shoes. Despite such richness, the ability to project a clean, simple style... is undoubtedly the power of the brand.
