A Retrospective of Britain's Foremost Artist
Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) was a leading British sculptor and a pivotal artist in 20th-century sculpture. Her works, embodying the rhythmic vitality of nature and a refined sensibility for materials, are highly acclaimed, and the Hepworth Wakefield museum is located in St Ives, Cornwall.
The "Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern World" exhibition is the first retrospective of Hepworth's work in London spanning 50 years. It features pieces crafted from various materials such as wood, stone, and bronze, ranging from her early works to large-scale sculptures created in the 1960s. The exhibition includes her iconic abstract sculptures, as well as textiles, photographs, and films. Works by her contemporaries and predecessors, such as Henry Moore, her friend from art school, are also displayed.
Common Ground Between Barbara Hepworth and Margaret Howell
For Margaret Howell, Barbara Hepworth's personal style and work have always been a source of inspiration. To support this retrospective, she has created a small collection of simple, contemporary workwear pieces.
"Barbara Hepworth is one of those special people who have influenced me through her work, her life, and her style. She was a woman who needed pockets to hold her sculpting tools, pencils, and stones collected from the shore, rolling up her shirt sleeves as she worked."
"I grew up in an environment close to her world. St Ives, where I spent holidays as a child, and Yorkshire Dales, where I once lived… like her, I am strongly drawn to undulating landscapes and the textures of wood, stone, and plants."
"And I resonate not only with her independence, strength, and pragmatism as an artist, but also with the workwear she wore and how she wore it."
"The collaboration items were designed to celebrate her spirit. I believe she would have been pleased to wear them."
Margaret Howell spoke of Barbara Hepworth.
