Future Footwear and Reservation-Based Shoe Care Workshops Also Held

March 2020 marked 150 years since Japan's first shoe factory was established in Tsukiji, Tokyo, signaling the beginning of the country's shoe industry.
Initially created to produce military boots that fit Japanese feet, the Japanese leather shoe industry has continued to develop through various challenges and changes.
The story began in March 1870 when Shozo Nishimura, a former samurai of the Sakura domain, opened a shoe factory in Tsukiji. In response to the era's demands for industrial promotion and national prosperity, shoe factories were successively established across the country, laying the foundation for today's Japanese shoe industry.
After overcoming societal shifts such as post-war turmoil, high economic growth, the rise of fashion, and internationalization, the industry has reached its "150th anniversary" this year.
The event "Special Feature: Shoe Museum - 150 Years of Japanese Leather Shoes," held at Shibuya Scramble Square, offers a valuable opportunity to experience this long history firsthand.
The exhibition will feature a wide array of footwear, including shoes that were popular over the past 150 years, designs conceived by students and young shoemakers for future footwear, new releases from various shoe brands, and special anniversary models.

Visitors can deepen their knowledge of the history and culture of leather shoes while admiring the beauty of these exquisite shoes, many of which are akin to works of art.
Additionally, reservation-based shoe care workshops will be held, offering insights into how to maintain beloved leather shoes for years to come. This event is sure to foster a deeper appreciation for leather footwear. We encourage you to attend.
