Enjoying the "Unnecessary"

Today, geta have been replaced by Western shoes, and are rarely worn in daily life. However, it is said that geta offer health benefits, such as promoting blood circulation. Perhaps it's time to reconsider the humble geta.

Mikamo Geta is based in Tokushima Prefecture. Here, they produce paulownia geta that fuse Japanese tradition with modern materials, such as using sweatshirt fabric for the straps. Mikamo Geta describes geta as "a wonderfully beautiful culture, perfectly suited to Japan's climate and environment."

With this in mind, they pursued the creation of comfortable geta with designs that can be adapted to modern lifestyles and daily scenes, resulting in the models we introduce here.

The appearance is one of pure simplicity, embodying the essence of "Wa" (Japanese aesthetics). The materials used are kept to a minimum, allowing the natural colors of the materials to shine through, while artisans meticulously finish each pair by hand. By incorporating wood as a fashion element, its unique characteristics are further enhanced. The paulownia wood used by Mikamo Geta is highly resistant to humidity and has long been familiar in Japanese life, often processed into furniture.

A notable feature is the use of sweatshirt fabric, knitted on a loopwheel machine, for the straps. In collaboration with Kanekichi Kogyo, a long-established company in Wakayama Prefecture that operates rare loopwheel machines, they have achieved straps made from plump, thick sweatshirt fabric. This makes them comfortable to wear even for extended periods without causing foot pain.

A wide variety of styles are available for men, women, and children, allowing anyone to enjoy a life with geta.

Geta are not strictly necessary for daily life. However, it is precisely these "unnecessary" things that enrich the human spirit. Perhaps embracing the "unnecessary" is a hint to adding stimulation to our lives.
