Shoes Built to Last
"Wheel Robe" is a shoe brand founded in Japan in 2015. "Wheel" signifies a wheel, and the brand name represents "a life's journey." The brand concept is a wish for customers to wear their meticulously crafted shoes with affection throughout the course of their lives.
To ensure that users can enjoy their shoes for many years, they are constructed using the "Goodyear Welt" method, which facilitates easy repairs. Additionally, the outsole is partially reinforced with rubber. To prevent this rubber half-sole from peeling off, a meticulous step is taken: the toe of the outsole is cut at an angle, and the rubber is inserted into this recess.
The leather used is Chromexcel from HORWEEN, based in Chicago, USA. Its high oil content, exceptional feel, durability, and water resistance have led to its use in various sports equipment, including baseball gloves. Despite its thickness, it's a material that conforms well to the foot.
The finishing cream, developed in collaboration with COLUMBUS, is applied to the upper, achieving a subtle sheen that complements the Chromexcel's natural luster.
The lining is luxuriously made of cowhide, extending all the way to the toe. It offers a soft feel upon entry and excellent moisture absorption. The piping around the collar and the eyelets are not only functional, preventing the upper from tearing, but also serve as design accents.
Original Lasts Achieve Both Beautiful Aesthetics and Comfort
The last is the most crucial element in Wheel Robe's shoemaking process. It significantly influences the shoe's aesthetic, comfort, and ease of walking. Based on proven, traditionally used lasts, artisans have made unique modifications to suit the foot shape of Japanese people. While prioritizing visual beauty, they have incorporated features to support walking.
There are two types of lasts, each with distinct characteristics.
The "#314 LAST" is based on the last used for service shoes adopted by the U.S. Navy. It features an "E" width and a long toe box, with a slender arch. The heel is kept small, and a generous counter provides a secure hold. This last is used for plain-toe shoes and boots.
The other last, "#1228 LAST," is based on lasts used in orthopedic shoes designed to treat foot ailments and support foot function. It has a "D" width. It curves inward from the arch to the toe, with a thin instep and a slightly wider overall construction. Like the "#314 LAST," the heel is formed to be small. This last is used for items such as punched cap-toe shoes and loafers.
