Stylist Arata Kobayashi on Creating a Style That Exudes a Good Atmosphere

For this season's visuals, Margaret Howell enlisted stylist Arata Kobayashi, known for his work in magazines, advertising, and with artists. We spoke with Kobayashi, who checks Margaret Howell's collections every season, about the brand's appeal and his styling characteristics.

A Renewed Appreciation for Margaret Howell's Essence

When creating the visuals for the Spring/Summer collection, I carefully considered and put together the outfits. The distinct textures of linen, unique silhouettes, and subtly clever details throughout the garments exuded a British minimalism that made me rediscover Margaret Howell's charm.

While there are no major changes in the creation this season, I particularly focused on conveying a sense of the season, aiming for the model's comfort and ease, and a relaxed feeling that would resonate with the viewer. I wanted to create an image that exuded a good atmosphere.

The Nuance of Styling Born from Subtle Differences

The interesting challenge of styling Margaret Howell lies in the fact that while you can make the clothes work together, a sense of style emerges from subtle choices. For example, choosing beige or black for trousers, or white or black for shoes... both are correct, but it's these small differences that reveal the joy of coordination. Because Margaret Howell doesn't rely on standout pieces, the styling truly becomes an expression of the wearer's individuality.

Trousers in black paired with a blue 7-sleeve button-down shirt, with the shirt tucked inwas chosen because it suited the model better for this shoot. Many people would look better with beige trousers and the shirt worn untucked.

As the temperature rises, layering opportunities decrease, making personal style even more crucial. Incorporating black and grey items, as Margaret Howell suggests this season, offers a fresh approach.

Kobayashi's Favorite Coordinates

Personally, I was drawn to the suits with their unique silhouettes when putting together the looks for this shoot. I used the tie as a focal point. Also,A style combining a linen short-sleeved shirt with a tiealso captures the brand's signature relaxed yet traditional feel, which I appreciate.

I often collaborate with photographer Kiyotaka Hatanaka. His framing is entirely his own sense of style. His photographs are masculine yet elegant, imbued with the refined atmosphere he cultivated in England. The subjects are strong yet possess a certain grace, perfectly embodying Margaret Howell's menswear.
