Stylist Naoki Ikeda on Margaret Howell Spring 2015
The photoshoot for this Margaret Howell collection took place late last year. Photographer Kiyotaka Hatanaka (pictured top middle) and stylist Naoki Ikeda (top left) collaborated to create new visuals for Margaret Howell Men. We asked Mr. Ikeda for his impressions of this spring's collection.

Intriguing Details Create Dynamic Styling
Mr. Naoki Ikeda, who has been responsible for styling Margaret Howell's lookbooks for the past few seasons, shared his thoughts on the overall impression of the men's collection this spring. "This season, like the last, is based on monochromatic, tone-on-tone coordination. Within that framework, we've skillfully incorporated a sense of the season by using bright, one-color palettes in shades like grey and beige, or by strategically adding white to achieve a spring-like feel."
He continued, "The biggest highlight this season lies in the details: adding a scarf to a workwear-inspired overshirt for a casual upgrade, or shortening the trousers and widening the double-breasted jacket's lapels by 5cm. The way the footwear is styled also transforms the overall look, creating an interesting balance."
Embrace the Bold: Margaret Howell for Spring
"The jackets and trousers, crafted from fabrics for Fox Brothers' Spring/Summer collection, were a key theme in this season's styling. We focused on highlighting the inherent qualities of these exceptionally fine materials," Mr. Ikeda explained.
This season features four patterns from Fox Brothers: End on End, Prince of Wales, Tropical, and Stitch Stripe. For the styling using the 'Tropical' jacket, a knitted layer was added to create a tied-up look. "We wanted a touch of white in the V-zone, so we layered a boat-neck knit. Its wider opening compared to a crew neck provided just the right amount of casualness."
For the 'End on End' pieces, which possess a subtle depth even in their solid colors, he chose grey ties for the set-up. With the 'Prince of Wales' set-up, navy ties were selected, aiming for "low-contrast coordination that allows the colors and patterns to complement each other," he noted.
"Incorporating white and beige, which are key trend colors for this spring and summer, creates a contemporary balance. Pairing the 'Stitch Stripe' jacket with a white T-shirt, or letting a hint of white peek through from a knit collar, freshens up the entire look."
Looking through the newly completed Margaret Howell lookbook, Mr. Ikeda commented, "This season offered more freedom in styling. Even subtle changes, like the width or length of the trousers, gave the quintessential Margaret Howell aesthetic a surprisingly aggressive edge."
