Hidetoshi Nakata Connects John Lobb Master Last Maker with Japanese Tradition

Hidetoshi Nakata and the Master of Gion Naitou in Conversation (3)

By acting as an intermediary, I hope to foster a new encounter between the craftsmen of John Lobb, who create the world's finest shoes, and Seiji Naito of Gion Naitou, who crafts Japan's finest zori.──This visit to Kyoto is the realization of Hidetoshi Nakata's vision, born from his journey across Japan's 47 prefectures, which allowed him to rediscover the world-class techniques and culture that Japan possesses.

Embracing Japanese Culture

When Nakata asked about Francois's foot impression, Naito replied, "Francois, welcome to Kyoto. And thank you, Nakata-san. I have long admired the beauty and precision of John Lobb shoes, so it is an honor to meet you. Francois's feet, while affected by bunions and pain, give an overall impression of being healthy and full of vitality."

Naitou mentioned that foreign customers have increased at his shop over the past year.

"Wearing zori with the heel extending beyond the sole is a habit of our lifestyle, much like sitting seiza on tatami. Ten years ago, all foreigners who came here struggled with it. But now, three or four out of ten say they will wear them this way. I can feel their desire to embrace Japanese culture. They measure their feet, try them on, and say, 'These look great.'"

Naito added, "Also, the quality of tourists visiting Kyoto has improved, and concierges are increasingly seeking to introduce more creative and high-quality Japanese products." Nakata agreed, "I myself need to find more opportunities to wear kimonos and zori."

Recognition from Abroad Sparks Action

Regarding Nakata's efforts to highlight Japanese traditions through various media, Naito expressed his gratitude and encouragement. "When you're immersed in your work, it's hard to fully appreciate your own value. But when an outside perspective comes in, it can bring new insights. It allows us to move forward with our work and, if we can connect with people interested in this craft, it can lead to successors. I'm delighted that through Nakata-san, articles like this can spark interest."

Nakata remarked, "The more I learn about Japan, the more profound it becomes. It's fascinating how foreigners often show more interest and engagement than Japanese people. However, that means I need to study even more. Encounters like today's will always lead to future connections, so I hope many people will become interested in our traditions and culture."
