Hidetoshi Nakata's Visit to the Trion Paris Atelier (2) | JOHN LOBB

The Paris Atelier Visited by Hidetoshi Nakata for Trion (2)
John Lobb has been crafting bespoke shoes for over 150 years. The traditional techniques of John Lobb continue to be passed down not only in bespoke but also in ready-made shoes today. Bespoke, in particular, is created by artisans at the atelier on Rue Mogador in Paris, who spend approximately 50 hours crafting a single pair of shoes.

An Atelier in Paris with an Unrivaled Environment
Further back in the room on the first floor of the atelier, where the lasts are kept, lies a small room storing precious leathers. Since joining the Hermès group in 1976, John Lobb has been able to gather rare materials, including the finest leathers selected from around the world and exotic leathers.
Furthermore, all the tools to assist the satisfactory handiwork of the artisans are available, and according to François, the master last maker, the John Lobb atelier is equipped with a complete system, creating an environment that is second to none.
From the Corridor to the Last-Making Room
Exiting the corridor and entering the room where the lasts are made, with its array of machines for shaving and shaping wood, I meet and greet Morgan, the 'ambossoiriste' (shoetree maker). The shoetrees provided with bespoke shoes are made here.
Bespoke Samples Renewed on a Biannual Cycle
On the day of Mr. Nakata's visit for the Trion coverage, all the bespoke samples, soon to be dispatched worldwide, were gathered at the atelier. "It's almost impossible to see everything, but the timing was very good this time," said François.
While most women visit with a clear idea of the shoes they desire, most men tend to finalize their design after viewing these samples. These samples are reportedly renewed on a biannual cycle.
John Lobb's bespoke shoes, from fitting (measurement) by a master last maker (or master shoefitter) at John Lobb stores worldwide, take approximately four months for the trion (fitting) and another four months for completion.
The ultimate pair, with every detail—model, design, leather, heel height, sole, and special specifications—chosen by the client.—The anticipation of the shoes being made, and the time spent imagining them throughout this approximately eight-month process, is an exceptional experience that cannot be replicated with ready-made products.
