The Sound of Craftsmanship, Unheard

On the second floor of the bespoke atelier on Rue Mogador, in the heart of Paris, a beautiful space with high ceilings and abundant natural light awaits. Here, John Lobb's skilled artisans meticulously carry out every stage of shoemaking by hand, in a division of labor.

Upon entering the atelier, the first room reveals three master last makers, including François Madenini, working at a large wooden table. François, John, and Michel are responsible for crafting the 'forme' (form). A serene atmosphere pervades the room.

The next room features desks arranged by bespoke process order along a bright window, facilitating a smooth workflow.

The 'patronier' (pattern maker) draws the patterns, Hugo is in charge of selecting the finest leather ('la relève'), and Noémie cuts the leather according to the patterns ('coupé').

Next, 'l'apprêtage'—attaching and sewing the lining—is handled by Isabelle, Edith, and Karine. Finally, 'montage'—sewing the sole—is undertaken by Christophe and Olivier.

Each Specialist Faces a Single Pair of Shoes

Once the shoe is complete, Master Last Maker Michel descends to the ground floor workshop to press the John Lobb logo onto the leather sole. Adjacent to this is a room where the lasts, carved from hornbeam wood, are preserved.

With each order and fitting ('trion'), the last evolves and grows. In essence, the adjustments to the last can be seen as a record of the wearer's journey. How romantic is that?
