Among the approximately 20 craftsmen at the John Lobb Paris bespoke atelier, only three hold the title of "Master Last Maker." François Madignier, one of these esteemed artisans, visits Japan three times a year for the "Bespoke Order Meetings." As he travels the globe for these events, he has observed the Japanese appreciation for detail and their deep respect for craftsmanship.

François on Hidetoshi Nakata's Feet

"You have strong feet. It's clear you were a top-tier football player. Your index toe is longer, a so-called 'Greek foot,' which is not a common shape among Asians. You mentioned discomfort where the bone of your big toe presses, and I actually have a similar condition, so I understand the associated pain well."

As a Master Last Maker, François has overseen approximately 1,000 bespoke orders to date.

"For Mr. Nakata's order this time, it's for loafers. I had him try on the Fencote and Lopez models. He seemed to favor the Lopez, as it has a slightly rounder silhouette. The Lopez was originally a bespoke shoe, using the 8695 last, specifically designed for loafers. It's a classic round toe, and it should fit beautifully with the style he desires."

The Lopez model, introduced in 1950, is based on a loafer custom-made for the Major League Baseball player A. Lopez. Both the upper and lining are crafted from a single piece of the finest calfskin. Renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship, visible from every angle, it remains a popular choice today.

"Considering the width, instep, and the bone area, I want to create the perfect loafer for Mr. Nakata that meets his preferences."

From Trion in Paris to Kyoto

After the measurement at the Marunouchi store in Tokyo, the next step, the "trion" (fitting), is scheduled to take place at the Paris workshop. Furthermore, during François's next visit to Japan in July, an encounter with Kyoto's footwear artisans will be arranged, guided by Mr. Nakata.

François remarked during the measurement, "I felt Mr. Nakata's deep respect for craftsmen." He added that Mr. Nakata expressed a desire to connect Japanese and French culture by introducing him to any Japanese craftsmanship that catches his interest.

"I have long been interested in traditional Japanese footwear. This opportunity to meet Japanese artisans, thanks to my encounter with Mr. Nakata, is a great honor. It will be a chance to compare our methods, and I am very much looking forward to it," said François.

Through Mr. Nakata's introduction, Japanese and French artisans will forge a new connection.
