Leather Goods Inspired by Bauhaus

Maison Corthay has released leather goods inspired by Bauhaus (*). This collection features designs that are like works of art, incorporating Bauhaus characteristics such as geometric patterns and vibrant color palettes into the forms of leather accessories.

There is no distinction between artist and craftsman

In 2010, at the "Bauhaus Modern Workshop" held in New York, Pierre Corthay recognized the affinity between Bauhaus and Corthay. Both share a love for architecture, art, and painting, and uphold the strong philosophy that "there is no distinction between artist and craftsman."

The leather is sourced from a historic tannery in France, meticulously tanned using chrome and vegetable methods to impart rich flexibility. Furthermore, an aniline finish is applied, preserving the natural expression of the leather's grain, which develops character with use.

To uphold the craftsmanship that France prides itself on, we collaborated with a specialized atelier in Paris. The items, reinforced with saddle stitching and hand-sewn edges, can be considered masterpieces finished with the most traditional techniques. In the final stages, skilled artisans manually polish, dye, and heat-treat each piece. This process is repeated multiple times to achieve a perfect finish.

In this collection, to pay the highest respect to the artisans of Bauhaus, each item is named after Bauhaus members such as Wassily (Wassily Kandinsky) and Marcel (Marcel Breuer).

(*) Bauhaus: A school that existed in Weimar, Germany, from 1919 to 1933, offering education in arts and architecture, including crafts, photography, and design. It also refers to the rationalist and functionalist art that followed its principles. Even after losing its form as a school, the term "Bauhaus" continues to live on as a unique design philosophy to this day.
