The History and New World of J.M. Weston (Part 1)

In 1932, the same year the Nazi Party achieved a landslide victory in the German general election, J.M. Weston opened its flagship store on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The boutique quickly became a bustling hub for the era's Parisian elite. It was during this period that iconic J.M. Weston models, still in production today—the Hunt Derby, Chelsea boot, and Golf—were born. The brand's signature "180 Loafer" would emerge after World War II.

Shoes Loved by Presidents, Politicians, and Rebellious Youth

J.M. Weston's "180 Loafer" is the subject of a legend that claims, "In 1966, everyone was wearing Weston moccasins." Rebellious youths loitering at Champs-Élysées drugstores defied existing social norms by wearing loafers with jeans and bare feet, a gesture of defiance against their fathers' footwear. Later, during the student protests in Paris in 1968, these loafers became a symbol for the students.

The "180 Loafer," perfected by Eugène Blanchard, son of the founder of J.M. Weston, after developing over 200 models, has been crafted using the same last since its launch. While loafers, unlike lace-ups, are difficult to fit perfectly to the foot, the "180 Loafer" offers a precise fit through its 4mm size increments and a wide range of widths from A to F. Its construction, designed to envelop the entire foot along its natural curves, provides a comfortable, snug feel. The outsole is made from leather tanned in J.M. Weston's own tannery, ensuring exceptional durability.

The black box calf loafer is one of the world's best-selling products. In France and around the globe, it is highly valued as a gift for life's milestones, such as graduations and new jobs.

The "641," known as "Golf" due to its unique style derived from golf shoes, is another masterpiece representing J.M. Weston. The rubber sole, featuring the brand's initials in relief, offers excellent grip. Combined with a distinctive last that closely mimics the human foot, and available in four widths, it provides superior fit and comfort. The upper is crafted from Russian calf, offering protection against light rain and remarkable robustness.

Unrivaled Strength and Beauty, Crafted by Expert Artisans

The creation of a single pair of J.M. Weston shoes involves approximately three months and over 150 steps, all meticulously executed by skilled artisans adhering to traditional techniques.

The lasts are handcrafted by artisans, the raw hides are sourced directly from France's finest tanneries in over 150 varieties, the uppers are cut piece by piece for each shoe by leather cutters, and the soles are made from leather from the brand's unique sole tannery, ensuring exceptional strength...

Through the traditional Goodyear welt construction, which stitches the upper to the insole, J.M. Weston shoes have remained enduring masterpieces, celebrated for their comfort and beauty since their inception.

Designer Michel Perry: Innovation and Evolution

In 2007, J.M. Weston introduced "Conti," a new line paying homage to Prince Conti, who cherished fine art in the 18th century, as part of its New Classic Collection. The design was helmed by Michel Perry.

The "Conti" features elegant, flowing lines leading to a sharp toe, distinguished by an arabesque pattern of interwoven stitching and perforations as an original detail.

The arabesque pattern on the Oxfords, reminiscent of women's bodice embellishments, and the lacing on the Derbies, akin to the collars of men's shirts, skillfully accentuate the shoes' elegant shape, symbolizing this collection.

The "437 Derby" in black patent leather adds a rock-inspired touch to the collection. This fusion of stylish beauty and rock sensibility results in a collection of timeless elegance.

The New Parisian Elegance

Unveiled in 2008, "Graphic" represents Michel Perry's new design concept, bridging classic and modern aesthetics. Though minimalist, it draws inspiration from dandyism, rock music, and contemporary architecture. The contrast between the straight and curved lines defining the slender silhouette enhances individuality and charm.

The three models—"446 Oxford," "448 Cap Toe Derby," and "449 Derby"—are distinguished by their vamp design. The flat vamp, reminiscent of traditional moccasins, lends a dignified air to the shoe's form while reflecting light like a mirror.

Each model features wave-like detailingthe Oxford boasts a curve from the side to the vamp, while the Derby's quarter features a butterfly cut, imparting an elegant and sensual atmosphere that evokes Parisian style.
