Vol. 34: The Joy of Made-to-Measure
Yusuke“Making a suit made-to-measure means wearing clothes that fit your body. I’ve always felt this experience is profoundly meaningful for men.
By taking measurements and objectively assessing your size, you learn about your body's characteristics and habits. By choosing the fabric and seeing how it looks and drapes when formed into a suit, you gain a clear understanding. By experiencing these two elements firsthand, you establish a stylistic foundation within yourself, which proves incredibly useful when selecting other items.
Moreover, the made-to-measure system itself is well-designed to accommodate a wide range of body types. Some maisons offer an extensive variety, and the enjoyment increases as you customize to your preference, which is part of the appeal.
It begins with choosing the silhouette you desire, and as you create it, you realize your preferences, the ideal waistline, and hip balance. For instance, you might think, ‘This shape has a narrow V-zone, so perhaps a fabric with a bit more stretch would be better,’ or ‘This fabric for the trousers has a nice drape, so the silhouette will look sharp.’ Ideally, one would order all items, including shirts and shoes, but that would be too costly (laughs).
I also have suits made regularly, and each time, I discover something new. No matter how casual men's fashion becomes, confronting one's own size is paramount. In that regard, the experience of having a suit made made-to-measure can be a valuable lesson.”
