For this installment of The★Best 7, we’re taking you somewhere a little different. This is an area many fashion enthusiasts likely frequented in their youth, and it still brims with an exciting allure.

Vol. 24: VIVA☆Ameyoko [eím jóukou]

YusukeI needed a flashy jacket for work and found Uenoya Shirt Shop in Ameyoko while searching various sites. It had been a long time since I’d been to Ameyoko to look for things. This was my first visit in 30 years.

When I first moved to Tokyo and started working at the Popeye editorial department, I often came to Ameyoko to find material. I walked through Ameyoko, reminiscing, 'I used to come here a lot.' I bought the colorful jacket I was looking for, and then, glancing at the shop across the street, I saw New Balance '1300s' and impulsively bought them on the spot.

Ameyoko really is not to be underestimated. As I continued walking, feeling nostalgic, I found a shop called Tamami, where I used to buy Hartford shirts and McGregor blousons. I ended up buying a polo shirt there too.

My feeling that Ameyoko is truly great grew, and as I walked further, I discovered Nakata Shoten near Okachimachi, where camouflage pants were lined up. I made a rather large purchase of several pairs there as well.

I was able to reconfirm that Ameyoko is full of hidden gems, with shops selling enka cassette tapes and stands offering only bottled milk. For adults who love fashion, it’s definitely worth a visit to reconnect with your roots.
