Vol. 17: Burn, Red Pants! [hʌ'nt fɔ':r réd pæ'nts]

Yusuke“About once every ten years, I get the urge to wear red pants. I’m not entirely sure why myself. I might wear Bordeaux pants occasionally, but for some reason, I feel compelled to wear bright red pants on a ten-year cycle.

This current obsession was sparked when I bought these Calvin Klein pants with side stripes, designed by Raf Simons. I was surprised to find out how many red pants there are just this season.

With red’s strong presence, the coordination is meant to stand out. I’m perfectly fine with that! Rather than trying to style them neatly to match something, it’s important to have the mindset of, ‘I’m going to wear red pants!’

It’s similar to the resolve you have when putting on a leather jacket, I think.

Since ancient times, red has been said to possess spiritual power. The reason shrine gates are red is to ward off evil. Red underwear, like the fundoshi, is said to boost vitality because red represents the dynamism of life. Gifting red garments for one's 60th birthday is said to carry two meanings: warding off evil and a return to infancy, symbolizing a restart of life.

While those effects might be at play, I personally wear them with a lighthearted feeling, like 'lucky pants,' embracing the vivid image the color red evokes. Like 'the yellow handkerchief of happiness,' but 'the red slacks of happiness.' How retro! Most importantly, they genuinely lift my spirits when I wear them.”
