Interview with SUMURA Taichi

Taichi Sumura, a stylist known for his work with men's fashion magazines, talents, and advertisements, styled the looks for the 2015-16 Autumn/Winter menswear collection catalog distributed in Margaret Howell stores. We spoke with him about how to wear the tailored sets made from fabrics by "FOX BROTHERS," a familiar name to the brand, and "Lovat," a Scottish mill making its debut.

The World and Atmosphere of Margaret Howell

What were your impressions of Margaret Howell's 2015-16 Autumn/Winter menswear collection when you were preparing the catalog styling?

This season again features a focus on British fabrics, and I was struck by the runway show's styling, which used tone-on-tone coordination to create a sense of calm. While seemingly simple, the collection is truly a thoughtfully constructed contemporary offering, with jackets in a comfortable box silhouette and trousers ranging from tapered to wide.

Are there any differences from the previous season?

I found it skillful how the runway show, and subsequently the catalog styling, introduced individuality through subtle changes – like varying the neckline with turtlenecks or adjusting the length of the trousers and the choice of socks. Overall, it conveys that distinct Margaret Howell worldview and atmosphere.

What do you like about Margaret Howell?

Firstly, I love that the brand's creative direction is consistently defined. While retaining its British essence, it avoids making styling or layering feel complicated. Authentic pieces are updated with contemporary materials and details, making them easy additions to any wardrobe.

Letting Simplicity Shine

What was the focus for this catalog's styling?

As autumn was just beginning to emerge, I felt that pairing a jacket with a shirt or a turtleneck sweater was just right – the simplest and most beautiful approach. I particularly appreciated the subtle elegance of the color palette. The "FINE MERINO SHADOW CHECK" from "Lovat" offers a sophisticated, modern feel with its understated grey check. The "SUPER FINE SERGE" suit from "FOX BROTHERS" is a classic. It can be worn formally with a tie or dressed down casually. Both feature exquisite sizing that drapes beautifully on the body. Such tailored sets become visually appealing with simple additions and subtractions within a minimalist outfit.

What about the casual items?

My favorite was the "BARBOUR" jacket. Made from oil-treated cotton poplin, it has a lustrous finish yet feels lightweight, making it versatile for various styles. It pairs effortlessly with fine-gauge knits or can be layered over a suit. The unique charm of Barbour lies in its ability to embody Britishness across different looks. The "MHL." workwear-inspired jackets and trousers are also excellent, focusing on material quality and offering great practicality.

What is the appeal of styling for men?

When styling models or talents, the goal is to find clothes that suit them best. For oneself, it's about diligently searching for items that resonate. While exploring new items and brands is part of the joy of fashion, for men, discovering brands and shops that align with their personal style and image is a shortcut to looking fashionable.

What kind of man would suit Margaret Howell?

An intellectual man with a calm demeanor, a relaxed air, and an effortless presence. The styling reflects this mood, and it's the perfect brand for anyone seeking to embody that atmosphere.
