What the Name 'CRAFT' + 'ACTIVISM' = Craft Movement Aims For
'I was inspired by the London shop 'House of Beauty and Culture,' created by Christopher Nemeth, Richard Torry, and Judy Blame. They sparked a kind of renaissance, a neo-Arts and Crafts movement. I named this place 'THE CRAFTIVISM' with the hope that it would become a salon where people of my generation gather and a hub for culture,' says Nobukuni.
Nobukuni began searching for a property for his atelier around the summer of this year and decided on Ginza. 'Ginza has a strong image of tailoring. It's a very conservative town for men's tailoring, but in a way, it was also a Ginza I aspired to. I feel this area (Ginza 2-chome) will become a place where interesting movements in fashion will emerge.'
At 'THE CRAFTIVISM taishi nobukuni,' Nobukuni aims for tailoring that combines British style with Italian craftsmanship, further enhanced by Japanese originality. For example, he uses substantial British fabrics but tailors them with a lightness, adding his interpretation of contemporary style. For jackets, he meticulously crafts the shoulder structure, and for trousers, he draws inspiration from 1980s bespoke references.
'I want this to be a salon where we create wardrobes for those who have fully enjoyed life, or where guests and I can design together.' Full bespoke orders are accepted, as well as pattern orders. Full bespoke suits start at ¥280,000, pattern orders at ¥140,000, full bespoke jackets around ¥200,000, and trousers at ¥100,000. A full bespoke suit is completed in about a month, including measurements, fittings, and finishing, making the speedy turnaround a key attraction.
