MARGARET HOWELL IS MODERN BRITISH

Special Edition-2: A Deeper Look at Margaret Howell

"My approach to design is always intrinsically linked with specialist manufacturers – John Smedley, Mackintosh for their bonded raincoats, Tricker’s for shoes, and well-made shirts. How things are made is inherently part of the design. I have a respect and admiration for craftsmanship and quality," says Ms. Margaret Howell.
As showcased in the visual gallery above, collaborations with trusted manufacturers also add flair to her collections, reflecting her design philosophy.

The Pure and Beautiful Expression of MODERN BRITISH

Ms. Margaret Howell’s interests and style, at times scholarly, extend beyond clothing to architecture, art, and product design.

For instance, she favors post-war modern design and has revived chairs from the 1950s and 60s, crafted from elm wood by ERCOL, a company founded in 1920 by furniture designer Lucian Ercolani.

The unadorned simplicity, born from the innovative technique of bentwood, is perfectly suited for the MARGARET HOWELL x ERCOL collaboration.

ERCOL STACKING CHAIR (back) ¥67,200

She also draws attention to the designs of Ernest Race, a British architect who began his design career in the 1930s and created numerous iconic chairs in the 1950s (Mid-Century) under the motto "mass production of good quality." These forms were a result of designs conceived with an awareness of the material restrictions during post-WWII reconstruction.

This modern design by Ernest Race is also a favorite of Margaret's, reissued as MARGARET HOWELL x ERNEST RACE, and available exclusively at the flagship Jinnan store in Japan.

The Heron chair, designed in 1955 with a welded steel frame, remained in production until 1961.

The Antelope chair, designed in 1951 from painted steel rod and a pre-formed plywood seat, was created for use on the terraces of the Royal Festival Hall during the 1951 Festival of Britain exhibition.

Furthermore, her interests extend to architecture. In Japan, exhibitions are held, often centered around locations like the "MARGARET HOWELL LIFESTYLE SHOP JINNAN" in Jinnan, Shibuya Ward.

Consider architect John Penn, who followed an elite British path, attending Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, and experiencing the deeply rooted institutions there.

Born with artistic talent, he studied architecture in London, and after World War II, moved to Los Angeles, where he learned the traditions and ideas of European Modernism.

Based on these "open-minded" principles, he designed nine private residences. An exhibition showcasing these works was held in 2007.

Additionally, her "Span Housing" exhibition in 2006 showcased modern housing complexes built in Britain from the 1950s to the 1980s. Observing her preferences reveals a continuous exploration within simple forms.

Clothing, interiors, exteriors….

Rather than trendy collaborations, her work involves British products and manufacturers she deeply respects, and ideas that capture her attention in daily life are directly translated into beautiful forms for the world.

Why We Wear Margaret Howell.
It's likely because, as she herself explains, the "authentic" and "genuine" qualities are communicated directly to us.
