Trying on the New Evolution of Sport x Streetwear: ‘NIKE SPORTSWEAR’ (Part 1)
The New Evolution of Sport x Streetwear
Trying on NIKE SPORTSWEAR (Part 1)
It’s been a while, Shimazu here. My series has been on hiatus for a bit. After seeing various exhibitions and previews for Fall/Winter 08-09, the most intriguing was NIKE’s new line, ‘NIKE SPORTSWEAR.’ Today, I’ll introduce the premium collection within it, the ‘NSW COLLECTION,’ from my unique perspective.

NIKE's First Real Clothes Collection
The reason NIKE SPORTSWEAR caught my eye is that I’ve recently been running around my office and home, and when I have free time between work, I go swimming at a sports club in Aoyama. My acquaintances are surprised by this (laughs), but ever since I quit smoking, I’ve had an intense urge to move my body.
When jogging or swimming, naturally, I become interested in the apparel. However, I don’t think overly serious gear is quite right, yet I can’t ignore functionality. The perfect balance of a casual, streetwear feel, and the sizing I want to wear right now are also important.
I think many people are looking for wear with a similar sensibility to ‘SOUNDS GOOD,’ which is themed around sports, or ‘PRADA SPORT’ from when Neil Barrett was involved.
That’s how I discovered NIKE SPORTSWEAR, and it gave me the same thrill as early ‘PRADA SPORT.’
The difficulty with sportswear is that pursuing materials and functionality often leads to a lack of humor and modernity. NIKE SPORTSWEAR takes all those sporty aspects and subtracts them, focusing on uniqueness and modernity without being tied to NIKE’s heritage or vintage styles.
Yet, it also has a sense of ‘usefulness’ alongside the feeling of ‘wearing’ it.
Current high fashion pursues a certain mode, but there are definitely people (including those in the industry) who are exhausted by that trend. For those who feel this way, the sense of ‘usability’ offered here is incredibly fresh.
However, for NIKE, which doesn't even feature a prominent Swoosh on the chest, I think this is a very bold endeavor.
The Exquisite Sizing that Bridges Sport and Streetwear
What amazed me when I tried it on was the melton varsity jacket. Apparently, it’s NIKE’s first varsity jacket, and I was impressed by how NIKE would interpret it.
In any case, the sizing is streamlined, it’s light, and it’s warm. With insulating material on the inside, I felt like I could wear just a T-shirt underneath, except perhaps in the dead of winter.
Similarly, the mods parka and military-style jackets are lightweight and suitable for layering. Furthermore, they incorporate high-tech materials, bonded seams for windproofing, waterproof zippers, and reflectors, offering ample outdoor functionality.
If NIKE SPORTSWEAR outerwear were displayed in a select shop, and you tried it on without knowing it was NIKE, you’d surely be surprised, thinking, ‘NIKE can do this too!’
It would be perfect with rolled-up jeans, work boots, a vintage T-shirt, and this varsity jacket.
