A Dream Across Three Generations I'm Eager to Realize
This is the final installment of our three-part conversation with Tetsuya Okabe. In this segment, Mr. Okabe discusses what he considers the most crucial piece of ski equipment: boots. He also shares his current endeavors as a businessman dedicated to passing on skiing to the next generation, along with his future aspirations and dreams.

Boots Are the Most Important Ski Equipment
MatsudaI'd like to ask about boots for a moment. Are they really that important in skiing?
OkabeAbove all, boots are the most critical piece of ski equipment. If your boots don't fit properly, you simply can't compete, and that applies to recreational skiers too. I even used to attach rubber soles to my boots when walking on snow to protect them. That's how important they are.
MatsudaIn terms of fitting, what is the most crucial aspect?
OkabeI believe this is true for regular shoes as well, but first and foremost, it's the heel hold. Then, it's the inner walls. Even a slight difference in thickness or the fit of the liner can change how you ski. Skiing isn't just about power; it's about transferring momentum into the next movement, and you can't do that effectively without properly fitting boots. No amount of training will suffice on its own. Transmitting force requires attention to these details.

MatsudaThe importance of heel fit is exactly the same for dress shoes.
OkabeI imagine it's similar for dress shoes, but good ski boots are beautiful. Furthermore, when it comes to the relationship between a skier and their footwear, just focusing on ski boots isn't enough. I was meticulous about my running and training shoes, too, using custom insoles that fit my feet. For my everyday shoes, I had Birkenstocks, which were only available at pharmacies back then, custom-made to my foot shape. Now, my company has introduced a 3D foot-scanning machine. For our ski school clients, we recommend boots based on their scan results and also create custom insoles.
MatsudaThe John Lobb boots you're wearing today are also a boot style. Do you often wear boots with suits?
OkabeYes, I do. It's not necessarily because I used to ski, but I like the style of pairing dress boots with a suit. These are my first pair of John Lobs, and I appreciate that they have such a beautiful silhouette yet are completely comfortable. They envelop my feet without any discomfort. I also enjoy the satisfying grip they provide when I walk.
MatsudaThank you. I'm glad you like them.
OkabeBut shoes are truly important. I see many young people wearing shoes that don't fit their feet at all, and it makes me worry about their future. It's definitely not good for their health.

Creating an Outdoor Village for Three Generations to Enjoy
MatsudaYou mentioned insoles earlier. Could you tell us more about Neve's current activities?
OkabeDuring winter, our main focus is the ski school, so I'm on the snow most of the time. We have about 6,000 students this season. Additionally, we act as agents selling the gear and apparel I mentioned earlier.
MatsudaWhat were your thoughts when you retired from professional skiing at 30 and chose this path?
OkabeI started with the strong desire to share skiing, something I'd dedicated myself to, with as many people as possible. From the beginning, I envisioned not just running a ski school but also recommending gear that suited each person's level. While you can buy gear at any shop, the staff there don't know your skill level. I believe it's best for us, who understand your abilities, to offer advice.

MatsudaSpeaking of which, I heard you have a book coming out soon?
OkabeThat's right. On June 9th, a book I wrote, "Easy Exercises for a Slimmer Waist!" with an accompanying DVD, was released by Taihodo. About three years ago, I noticed my own waistline expanding due to lack of exercise or overeating, and felt a sense of urgency. I started doing 10-minute exercises daily. It yielded fantastic results, so I wanted to share it with others.
MatsudaSo, it's been proven effective. I'll definitely try it myself (laughs). What other future plans do you have in mind?
OkabeI want to create a village, a kind of 'oasis,' where people of all three generations, especially children, can enjoy outdoor life not just in winter but throughout the four seasons. This is a dream I am determined to realize.
MatsudaThat's wonderful. I wish you the best in making it happen. Thank you for sharing so many valuable insights today. It was a pleasure.
OkabeThank you as well.

“Around the time I turned 40, I noticed my waistline expanding, whether from lack of exercise or overeating. I enjoy jogging, but it becomes difficult in the cold winter months, and maintaining consistency is challenging. So, I decided that core exercises, which can be done anywhere, even for just 10 minutes a day, would be the answer. I started gently, lying down, without overexertion, and surprisingly, I’ve managed to stick with it even on the busiest days. To avoid the 'metabo' condition that's currently a topic of discussion, I hope this book will be helpful to many people (from Tetsuya Okabe).”
