Fashion Model TAO: An Interview (Part 2)

From the Paris Collection Runways—

TAO: A Fashion Model's Interview (Part 2)

For TAO, simply navigating the twice-yearly collections in Paris, Milan, New York, London, and her hometown of Tokyo means her life is split evenly between Japan and the world.
In the global fashion calendar, the Autumn/Winter menswear collections for this year have already begun.

This is the Last Time! I Can't Do Any More—

—You've experienced four seasons of Paris Fashion Week, TAO. Why do you pursue opportunities worldwide?

Lately, I think there's a bit of stubbornness involved (laughs). Initially, I had my own vision, but as I saw the reality, I realized it's not easy. The collection seasons arrive so predictably, and the cycle is so fast that there's no time to think. Sometimes I just wonder, 'Why am I doing this?'

—Does that mean you were tired?

I felt 'so tired' when I visited New York during a non-show season (laughs). New York just didn't quite suit me. I had work opportunities, but they weren't the kind I wanted. That gave me space to reflect, and when I thought, 'What am I working for?', the exhaustion hit me all at once.
So, I started thinking about quitting overseas work. Then I went to London, and it was all so difficult. I thought, 'This is the last time, I can't do any more.' But contrary to that feeling, the work went surprisingly well, and I thought it would be a waste to quit... It's been a cycle like that (wry smile).

—And so you rejoined the collection cycle...

I think about it every time. During the show season, I tell myself, 'This is the last time.' It's that tough, and it wears down my nerves. But once the season ends, I'm already thinking about the next one. 'I'll do this next time.'

I Want to Be Recognized as a Japanese Model

—What have you gained from your life as a model so far?

I was always quite proactive, but perhaps it's my drive. Living this kind of life, the world, in a good way, becomes smaller, and I can go overseas alone without hesitation.

—Do you have any specific considerations for the collections?

It's not just for collections, but my expressiveness—the ability to embody a role, to perform. Even as a model, I want to be someone who can express herself.

—Do you feel any advantages as a Japanese person in the global fashion scene?

Are you referring to Orientalism? Yes, that exists. Conversely, I feel I have to lean into it to be noticed. My long, black hair, the 'one-length' style—I get complimented a lot on this so-called 'Asian beauty.' But there's also a frustration, a dilemma, of what if I didn't have that? I don't want to compromise my style or force myself to fit in just to be popular overseas.

—Finally, TAO, what are your dreams?

I enjoy the shows. I think that's why I continue. I still want many designers to see me, and I want to be recognized as a Japanese model. I'll work hard so people say, 'That Japanese girl, TAO, was in the show.'
