Né-net Designer Talk (3)

The Driving Force of "Tokyo" Fashion (3)

Né-net Designer Interview: Kazunari Takashima x Yoshiyuki Shimazu

The topic for our third installment is the Tokyo Collection. The Spring/Summer 2008 collections kick off on August 30th, making it the very first Spring/Summer collection to be held in the world, preceding New York's.
How can the "Tokyo Collection" gain wider recognition beyond the fashion industry and its circles?

—Né-net's shows always seem to involve elaborate setups. It must be quite demanding.

ShimazuWe're completely exhausted afterwards (laughs). But it's always interesting. Mr. Takashima never compromises on the staging.

TakashimaIt's not just about showing the clothes; I want to express the world of Né-net, to convey its unique vision with a strong image.

ShimazuFor the Autumn/Winter collection in March, we lined up 50 fans and had them turn their heads in sequence. Backstage was chaotic (laughs). Bringing what you imagine to life takes time and money. That's what sets our shows apart from typical ones.

—And you create all the dolls and objects yourself, Mr. Takashima?

ShimazuNé-net shows are closer to installations than traditional fashion shows. Before this season, after the show, we would display the clothes so people could examine them up close, and they were very engaged.

—I see, installations. And with a dark fantasy feel.

ShimazuAlmost like Japanese fairy tales. I think that's perfectly fine.

—Mr. Takashima, do you pay attention to the press reviews after the collection?

TakashimaI don't concern myself with that.

—Do you feel the collection's theme was successfully conveyed?

TakashimaI believe it was, but looking back, I wonder if it might have been a bit too complex?

ShimazuThe international press responded very positively. Shows like Né-net's are unique, not found in Paris or Milan, so I think its originality came across. Mr. Takashima himself must have felt pressure, having won the Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix for New Designers the previous year.

—Mr. Shimazu, what are your thoughts on the current Tokyo Collection (Tokyo Collection)?

ShimazuI agree with the principle of coordinating schedules with international collections (New York, London, Paris, Milan) and inviting as many international fashion journalists, press, and buyers as possible. However, in reality, not that many foreigners attend, and the reaction from the Japanese press is somewhat cool. Media exposure is also limited. Perhaps too many shows are overly merchandised to appeal to Tokyo's fashion scene. This isn't a criticism, though.

—Indeed, the response seems particularly slow from magazines.

ShimazuI can't say for sure, but stylists and editors don't seem to be attending. Since it's a fashion promotion project funded by the government, they should aim for more editorial coverage. Many new designers are working hard.

—Are there any strategies to attract more attention?

ShimazuIt might sound bold, but why not hold the Tokyo Collection in Paris? I think we should be that audacious.

—That would certainly grab the attention of foreign media, whether they intended to or not. Mr. Takashima, what do you feel is the significance of participating in the Tokyo Collection?

TakashimaIf it's held during the collection season, many people can attend, so participation itself is the first step. The upcoming Spring/Summer 2008 collection starts on August 30th, before New York's, making it the world's first Spring/Summer collection of the season.

—That's also a trial, isn't it?

ShimazuThe Tokyo Collection itself is a trial within the global fashion calendar.
