White Mountaineering is generating buzz with the announcement of their collection presentation at the "Pitti Discovery Foundation Special Event" during the 83rd Pitti Immagine Uomo, held from January 8th to 11th next year. Immediately following the Spring/Summer 2013 collection presentation at Yoyogi National Gymnasium, we spoke with designer Yosuke Aizawa.

Why is Navy the Main Color for Sports?
Before the show began, "UNDERDOG," a Tokyo street basketball team with an undefeated record in streetball competitions, started their demonstration on the basketball court. As we watched the players, dressed in White Mountaineering's "WM" uniforms, gradually heat up, our anticipation for the collection grew.
—How many looks are in this collection?
There are 36 looks in total.
—Is "TRAINING DAY," mentioned on the invitation, the theme of the collection?
Yes. This time, we mixed training and sports—encompassing music, clothing, and even eras—rather than pursuing serious sports. We were particularly inspired by tennis styles from the 60s and 70s.
—Why that era's tennis style?
White Mountaineering's brand concept is "all fields where clothes are worn are outdoors," so we didn't specifically focus on tennis. However, the tennis styles of that time were gentlemanly and stylish.
—Specifically?
Items like cable knits and headbands are inspired by tennis player Björn Borg. The collaborative sneakers with Tretorn also stem from Borg. Expressing Tretorn in our own way, rather than focusing on cutting-edge sports, is also close to the theme of this collection.
—Where did the "TRAINING DAY" theme come from?
The theme for the previous Fall/Winter season, "Airport," was inspired by frequent overseas travel. This time, it came from my interest in sportswear after watching the London Olympics this summer. We also used sounds from table tennis and baseball in the show's music.
—Is navy the theme color this time?
Yes. Last time it was burgundy, but navy looks cool and strong in sports, has presence, and is a powerful color for clothing, so we've used it as the main color.
—The finale was a white shirt.
That's formal wear. This collection expanded on the idea of combining sports with gentlemanly elements, and we showcased our style with the white shirt.

Emphasis on Mixing Various Sports
This season's theme, "TRAINING DAY," presents a collection inspired by a fictional, collective sports team rather than a specific sport. It incorporates elements of 60s college sports to express fashion through sport.
—After finishing your exhibition in New York, you're presenting the collection in Japan. Are there any differences?
In New York, we present Ivy League, outdoor, and sports items in a solid, item-focused manner. After the exhibition, upon returning to Japan, we added elements like color schemes that we wanted people to see in the collection.
—Why is that?
At White Mountaineering, we've previously interpreted elements like military influences within outdoor wear. This time, we placed importance on mixing various sports and were particular about creating fashion through sports elements.
—Since this fall/winter season, stores like Estnation have started carrying White Mountaineering. Do you have a message for your new customers?
We focus on creating highly refined pieces, ensuring that the situation of wear and the texture of the material align, whether it's shirts or outerwear. These are clothes that can be worn across categories like casual and formal, so please enjoy wearing them.
