Craftsmanship Connecting Kyoto and Florence to the Future!
An Archive Exhibition, "Gifts of Time," Unveiling 90 Years of History
This year, Gucci celebrates its 90th anniversary. An exhibition event connecting the craftsmanship and traditions of artisans from Florence, Italy, the brand's birthplace, and Kyoto, its sister city, will be held in Kyoto and Tokyo. The first installment, held in June at Kyoto's World Heritage site, Kinkaku-ji, promises a delightful fusion of traditional beauty.

Gucci was born 90 years ago in Florence. A project conveying the artisan skills cultivated throughout its long history will unfold in Kyoto and Tokyo throughout 2011.
The project aims to broadly communicate the craftsmanship, starting with leatherwork, that originated in Florence, while also passing down to the next generation the wonderful traditional techniques of Kyoto, where similar artisan skills are alive, and to promote the importance of universal values.
For the exhibitions, a partnership has been formed with Kyoto University of Art and Design. Furthermore, attention is drawn to the overall supervision of the project by Hiroshi Senju, a world-renowned Japanese painter and the university's president. Fashion director Tomoki Sukezane, a close friend of Gucci's Creative Director Frida Giannini and a Kyoto native, will also provide guidance.
The first event, from Saturday, June 25th to Tuesday, July 13th, will feature a special exhibition of Gucci's archives in the "Hojo" (abbot's residence) of the "Rokuon-ji" (Kinkaku-ji) temple, a World Heritage site known as a symbol of Kitayama culture. The fusion of this historic structure, embodying Kyoto's traditions and artistic culture, with Florentine craftsmanship is a highlight.
From Saturday, October 15th to Friday, October 28th, at the "Galerie d'Aube" at Kyoto University of Art and Design. Various forms of traditional crafts showcasing the skills of artisans from Florence and Kyoto will be exhibited alongside Gucci's archives, further highlighting their beauty, quality, and profound value.
Additionally, in November, an event conveying artisan techniques is planned to be held at Gucci Ginza in Tokyo, which will be celebrating its 5th anniversary.
Gucci and Kyoto both value tradition and cherish artisan skills. We look forward to the new culture born from this combination.
