VanMoof, the high-tech bicycle manufacturer from the Netherlands, has announced its new electric bicycles, the "S3" and "X3." They will be available for purchase from April 22, 2020, on the online store and brand stores.
Over 40% Price Reduction from Previous Models
Founded in 2009 by two brothers, an industrial designer and an engineer, VanMoof has grown into a brand known among enthusiasts in Japan for its technology and design sensibility, sometimes referred to as the "Tesla of the bicycle world."
What sets VanMoof apart is that all parts, except for the tires, are designed and manufactured in-house. Furthermore, the adoption of anti-theft technology comparable to that of luxury automobiles for bicycles,
and their innovative ideas that defy convention continue to attract many people.
VanMoof first announced its "Electrified Series" with electric assist in 2014. Since then, they have released the first-generation "S" model in 2016 and the "X" model the following year, 2017. Now, after further upgrades, they have launched the fourth generation, the "S3" and "X3."
The new models feature a smaller, quieter motor, and for the first time, hydraulic brakes have been adopted, incorporating rider feedback. Additionally, the 4-speed automatic "e-shifter" can now have its shift timing customized to the rider's preference via the app.
The motor is a 250-350W unit. While the maximum assisted speed is 24 km/h to comply with Japanese electric assist bicycle standards, overseas models reach 32 km/h. A full charge of approximately 4 hours allows for a range of up to 150 km. The bikes can connect to a smartphone and are equipped with an anti-theft tracking system.
The price is ¥250,000, representing over a 40% reduction from the previous model, with deliveries scheduled to begin in May.
