√595, an incense brand launched in 2021, explores the essence of fragrance for contemporary living by focusing on the roots of scent. This is a joint project between Kunju-do, an incense manufacturer and retailer founded in 1893, and artist Kan Izumi. The long-awaited first product has now been released. We highlight eight items.

√595 is an incense brand that combines the techniques and knowledge cultivated by Kunju-do throughout its long history with the boundless sensibility of Kan Izumi, who works across various fields with scent as his axis. The brand name derives from "595 AD," the year when agarwood is said to have drifted ashore in Japan.

Through extensive research and experimentation from diverse perspectives, three scents were conceived: "Jinkoh," "Humidity," and "Soothe." This led to the creation of "Stick Incense" and "Paper Incense." Both feature high-quality, soft fragrances made primarily from naturally derived ingredients.

The "Paper Incense" is printed with a landscape of Awaji Island and can also be used as a postcard.

Two types of incense holders have also been released to accompany the "Stick Incense." The "Incense Holder CUBE595 <Wood>" is by Yoshiei Minamino, a contemporary artist based on Awaji Island, and is made from tabu wood, a primary ingredient in incense. The "Incense Holder <Glass>" is crafted from a molten glass mass created within the furnace during blown glass production. Light gathers in its random shape, creating a beautiful expression.
