Original Designs Born from the Theme of "Senses"
Launched in 2013, this year marks the third iteration of the award, which aims to foster emerging creators who generate ideas for a better future and design that enriches society.LEXUS DESIGN AWARDThe competition has consistently produced original works and garnered significant attention since its inception.
This year's 2015 competition centered on the theme of "Senses." A total of 1171 entries were received from 72 countries worldwide. Six distinguished judges, including renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito and Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, along with four mentors, convened to select the twelve winning entries through discussion.
Furthermore, the four top award winners will develop prototypes with advice from mentors who are also world-class creators: architect Arthur Huang, game designer Robin Hakin, architectural and design unit Neri & Hu, and designer Max Lamb.
From Japan, Keita Ebizuka, a researcher at the University of the Arts Tokyo's Kitawarah Lab, was selected for "ANIMAL MASKS," a mask incorporating digital devices that allow users to experience animal functions. Neri & Hu will serve as mentors for this project. Other selected entries include "LUZ" by Spanish designer Marina Melad Mendizabal, a lighting system that changes with natural weather patterns, designed for people in Nordic countries who are susceptible to the psychological and physical effects of insufficient sunlight.
These four prototype works, along with panels from the other eight award winners, will be exhibited at the LEXUS venue during Milan Design Week (Milan Salone) 2015 in Milan, Italy, from April 13 (Monday) to April 19 (Sunday). Award winners will also have the opportunity to present their work at the venue. Following this, one Grand Prix winner, the ultimate award of the "LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2015," will be selected from the four prototype works.
