The Charm of Tenugui: A Square Cloth, Approximately 33x90cm

A daily necessity, tenugui has been cherished since ancient times not only for wiping hands but also as a towel, bandana, handkerchief, and for gift wrapping. While the item has evolved over time with a rich variety of hand-dyed patterns and colors, the tenugui specialty store “Kamawanu” releases various color and pattern variations each year, in addition to its basic collection.

The brand “BY KAMAWANU” reinterprets the concept of tenugui through Thomas Lykke (OeO design studio), who is active globally and based in Copenhagen, Denmark, presenting it as a scarf to enhance daily styling. The scarf, with its superior texture and beauty achieved through the stencil-dyeing technique that leaves no front or back, becomes richer in cotton texture with repeated washing and can be worn refreshingly even in summer.

Utilizing as a Summer Fashion Item

The BY KAMAWANU scarf collection is characterized by designs that leverage the spectrum of Japanese indigo blue. Each pattern is an update of traditional Japanese motifs, cherished by “Kamawanu,” transformed into universally familiar geometric patterns and presented as a fresh lineup of fashion items.

The installation for this limited-time pop-up store is handled by the acclaimed display artist Kazunori Matsumura, known for his work with Aesop, ViA BUS STOP, and Cosme Kitchen. The theme is "A garden scene with laundry poles," commonly seen in Japanese folk houses.
