LITMUS: The Indigo Artisans of Kugenuma
An Exhibition Steeped in Indigo
LITMUS, a collective of indigo dyers based in Kugenuma, Shonan, practices the ancient Japanese dyeing technique of "Aku Hakkodate" (fermented indigo vat dyeing). Their exhibition, "ALL NATURAL INDIGO HAND DYED BY LITMUS INDIGO STUDIO JAPAN," will be held from Saturday, April 12th, at the concept shop "LAILA TOKIO and 7×7" in Shibuya.

Indigo Dyeing Rooted in "ALL NATURAL INDIGO"
LITMUS, which inherits traditional true indigo dyeing by using natural materials and creating the blue of indigo through natural fermentation, is a group of artisans who, while preserving age-old techniques, express the color indigo in various forms through their own unique filter.
This exhibition, "ALL NATURAL INDIGO HAND DYED BY LITMUS INDIGO STUDIO JAPAN," features work presented as part of "FRONT," an initiative by "LAILA TOKIO"—a select shop focused on vintage fashion—that irregularly introduces activities and works in fashion, art, and design.
The items they will be dyeing this time are a collection of vintage pieces that LAILA has gathered over many years. The selection ranges from rare rock T-shirts and antique shirts to silk scarves, blousons, and shoes.
The unique texture of vintage fabrics, along with the fading that comes with age, will interact with the indigo blue to create entirely new, unexpected expressions.
