Expressing New Textiles Based on Nishijin-ori

Opened in Kyoto in September 2019 as HOSOO's first retail store, theHOSOO FLAGSHIP STORE.
This space also houses HOSOO GALLERY, a textile gallery that expresses the culture and history of weaving in three dimensions, and HOSOO LOUNGE, where visitors can enjoy sweets and drinks.
Now, HOSOO GALLERY is hosting "COLORTAGE," an exhibition by HOSOO in collaboration with Dutch textile designer Mae Engelgeer.
The title is derived from the words "Color" and "Heritage," signifying the fusion of Nishijin-ori's historical legacy with Engelgeer's unique color aesthetics, expressing a commitment to creating new textiles.
Engelgeer is known for her distinctive sense of color and intuitive sampling, excelling in creating textiles that, despite their minimalist and refined designs, richly express the texture of the materials. She is a designer garnering significant global attention.
She stayed in Kyoto for a month starting in July 2019, exploring new expressions in Nishijin-ori textiles through collaborative work with artisans at the HOSOO studio.
This exhibition will feature an installation of the new textile work "SINUOUS" as a result of their collaboration, alongside a comprehensive display of HOSOO's new textile collection created through this partnership.
The new textiles are designed with Nishijin-ori's characteristic delicate threadwork and Engelgeer's unique design approach, intended to achieve a harmonious look regardless of the color combination.
These items introduce a new perspective to Japan's traditional crafts, born from an approach previously unseen in the history of Nishijin-ori.
Concurrent with the exhibition's opening, pouches made from the new textiles will be released in a limited edition for 2020 and in limited quantities at the HOSOO FLAGSHIP STORE.
The pouches, in a square shape that highlights the new textiles, are available in three sizes and feature eight different textile patterns.
Woven with a diverse array of threads, they possess a deep visual richness while maintaining a style that is practical for everyday use.

HOSOO LOUNGE Offers "Kasane Iro Me no Macaron - Winter" for a Limited Time

The macarons at HOSOO LOUNGE are themed around "Kasane Iro Me," the aesthetic of kimono color combinations for women that originated in the aristocratic culture of the Heian period.
This traditional Japanese color-pairing method, developed by the Japanese people, is said to encompass as many as 200 variations.
A characteristic of Japanese dyeing and weaving throughout history has been the selection and use of colors and patterns appropriate for each season, reflecting a distinct aesthetic sensibility.
In line with this custom, which expresses delicate sensibilities, the original macarons from HOSOO LOUNGE are created in collaboration with Kyoto's confectioners. They feature colors reminiscent of Kasane Iro Me and rich, seasonal flavors, offering a sweet experience that connects the palate to the changing seasons.
Currently available are three varieties that capture the essence of winter: "Matsushige," "Hitsuyuki," and "Tsubaki."
These macarons embody HOSOO's aesthetic values and respect for the seasons. We encourage you to visit and experience them.
