An Exhibition Introducing Swiss Design Made in Japan

With the Tokyo Olympics just a year away, various companies and organizations are planning related initiatives and activities. Among these, "Swiss Design / Made in Japan" is an exhibition to be held this autumn as part of the "Gateway to Switzerland" campaign, organized by the Swiss Embassy in anticipation of Tokyo 2020. As the title suggests, it introduces "Swiss design made in Japan" through the perspective and sensibility of a curator, offering a valuable opportunity to connect Switzerland and Japan through design and experience the fusion of cultures.

Items Crafted by Swiss Designers in Collaboration with Japanese Companies

The exhibition "Swiss Design / Made in Japan," showcasing "Swiss design made in Japan," will be held from October 15 to 22, 2019, in Harajuku, Tokyo.
The curation was handled by David Grellet, a Swiss national who has been based in Japan since 2008.
After studying design in Switzerland, he worked in Japan in directorial and managerial roles, connecting domestic manufacturers and artisans with international designers and engaging in craftsmanship. The theme he presented was "Swiss Design / Made in Japan."
The venue will feature items born from the collaboration between Swiss designers and art directors with Japanese companies, manufacturers, and producers, displayed alongside their stories. It will showcase how the innovative products and everyday items designed by young Swiss designers are integrated into daily life.
Furthermore, a cafe corner, shop, and lounge will be available, allowing visitors to enjoy Swiss design made in Japan from various perspectives.
Participating designers include: atelier oï, BIG-GAME, Carlo Clopath, Colin Schälli, Dimitri Bähler, Fabrice Aeberhard, Kueng Caputo, Loris Gomboso, Lucien Gumy, Lukas Streit, Max Bill, Moritz Schlatter, Philippe Cuendet.
Even if you don't recognize their names, their designed products might be close to you.
This exhibition promises to be a meaningful experience, offering insights into the products born from the fusion of Swiss design innovation with Japanese craftsmanship and tradition, as well as the cultural exchange and commonalities between the two countries, all through Grellet's discerning eye.
