“The Weavers of Lapua,” embodying sincere Finnish character
"Lapuan Kankurit" means "The Weavers of Lapua." The company's origins trace back about 100 years when Juho Annala, the great-grandfather of the current owner Esko Hjelt, began making felt boots from yarn. Today, inheriting the know-how to create better products and the spirit of making daily life beautiful and comfortable, they have grown into a widely known textile manufacturer in Finland, utilizing diverse expressions in jacquard weaving, wool, and linen. And this autumn, their first store outside of Finland opens in Omotesando.
Lapua has long been known for its many small factories and its thriving craft scene in woodworking and textiles. Following Esko's great-grandfather's production of felt boots, his sons and brothers took over the business, adapting to the needs of the times with ventures like cleaning services and blanket manufacturing, continuing the family business. In 1973, the company was established under the name "Lapuan Kankurit," beginning tapestry production. Then, with the addition of the fourth-generation owner Esko's expertise in linen production and his partner Janna's marketing prowess, it leaped forward to become a world-renowned textile brand.
We want to provide beautiful and comfortable fabrics, essential to everyday life. At the Omotesando store, which inherits their passionate spirit of craftsmanship, you can experience a rich lineup and their tactile comfort. They also plan to introduce Finnish culture, products, and artists that enrich life, so keep an eye out. Towels, blankets, and shawls – for everyday textiles, we want to use beautiful things comfortably. We hope you find your own special piece at "Lapuan Kankurit" in Omotesando.
