"Oginoya Kamagata Shikii" Wins Good Design Award

The "Oginoya Kamagata Shikii," created by Oginoya Co., Ltd. with production support from WASARA, a company developing eco-friendly paper tableware, has received the "2013 Good Design Award" (hosted by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion).

This award suggests new possibilities for paper containers

"Touge no Kamameshi," a long-selling station bento box for 55 years, is traditionally served in a Mashiko-ware pot. The "Oginoya Kamagata Shikii," a paper container inspired by this pot, was developed in response to customer feedback that the Mashiko-ware pots were heavy. Like WASARA, it is made from non-wood pulp derived from sugarcane bagasse.

The award was given in recognition of this excellent renewal, which preserves the bento's culinary culture for the future, by using paper instead of plastic and achieving a sophisticated, ceramic-like finish with a simple white color.

This container can be used to serve food directly and is suitable for packaging kamameshi, bento boxes, and souvenirs. While the "Oginoya Kamagata Shikii" is not currently sold, an "Oozora no Kamameshi" (Kamameshi in the Sky) using this container is available. Sales of Touge no Kamameshi using this container are also planned.

Paper containers are expanding their potential through environmental considerations and design. This award can be seen as contributing to the preservation of "new Japanese food culture."
