An exhibition where Hiroko Takahashi contemplates what she confronts with her “resolute stance”
Artist Hiroko Takahashi's work challenges the fixed ideas that permeate our daily lives, sparking new ways of thinking. Her energetic activities prompt us to question: "Am I truly thinking each day? Have I stopped contemplating?"
Consider, for example, the "resolute stance" portraits in this exhibition. They strip away the femininity inherent in kimonos, transcending traditional patterns and styling, suppressing convention and custom. The distance from the camera is coldly objective, yet the gaze is utterly sincere. While seemingly ascetic, they are in fact brimming with a multitude of emotions.
These emotions drive Hiroko Takahashi's diverse activities, creating new value unbound by existing markets.
Encountering her makes one pause.
Kentaro Ichikami, the 10th editor-in-chief of the magazine "Hakko" and a creative director at Hakuhodo, offers this message: "TAKAHASHI HIROKO is a phenomenon. She is innovative yet unpretentiously traditional. After all, tradition itself should be a continuous accumulation of questioning the essence of the ever-vibrant 'now.' Haven't we, by relying on the word 'inheritance,' merely hidden away important movements in the past? Encountering her makes one pause. Her astonishing flexibility, as if utterly indifferent to the definitions of the era, and above all, her attitude of striving for the essential, likely makes her talent genreless. In contrast, genres like 'fashion,' 'art,' or 'Japanese culture,' which would cease to function under such conditions, appear far less vibrant before this unrestrained 'now.'"

Born in 1977. Completed her doctoral program at Tokyo University of the Arts. Holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts. Established HIROCOLEDGE Inc. in 2006. Her designs are characterized by patterns expressed solely through circles and straight lines. Her creative activities, which aim to overturn familiar fixed ideas and provide opportunities for contemplation, can be seen as a conceptual series of works in themselves, offering insights through her creations.
She engages in a wide range of genre-defying expressions, including portrait works that approach subjects from new perspectives, and the "HIROCOLEDGE" project, which involves collaboration with various regions and artisans from production to sales.
