A Rich Italian Rail Journey
Italy's new high-speed train, Italo, is a joint venture funded by Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, chairman of Ferrari, and Diego Della Valle, president of Tod's. It began service last April. Currently, there are about 17 services daily between Milan and Rome, and 20 services daily between Florence and Rome.
The train, said to be the most modern in the world, was designed by Italdesign, led by master industrial designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who has designed numerous iconic cars. It also won this year's Design Award from the British design and culture magazine 'Wallpaper'.
Italo offers three classes of seating, similar to airline classes: the first-class "Club," business-class "Prima," and economy-class "Smart." All seats feature leather upholstery and Wi-Fi internet access. Passengers can enjoy the scenery from the window, watch movies, or spend their time as they please, complemented by high-quality service.
Italo's operator, NTV (Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori), has contracted with Rail Europe as a partner for overseas sales, marketing, and promotion. The Rail Europe Japanese website displays fares in Japanese yen and allows online ticket purchases. Tickets can also be booked through over 1,500 travel agencies nationwide in Japan.
Being able to confirm tickets in Japan allows for advance planning, making the Italo journey even more enjoyable. This adds another reason to look forward to a trip to Italy.
