Lighting Series "IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE"
Founded in 2007 by Issey Miyake, the project team "Reality Lab." engages in various research, studies, and development. Following the creation of the new clothing line "132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE" in autumn 2010, which utilized refined fabrics made from recycled polyester fibers and forms derived from mathematical principles of three-dimensional modeling, the lighting series "IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE" was born as an endeavor to explore a broader range of design possibilities beyond clothing during the development process of "132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE."

"IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE" is based on the traditional Japanese aesthetic of shadow (in'ei),—symbolically expressed in Jun'ichiro Tanizaki's "In'ei Raisan" (In Praise of Shadows), which posits that "beauty is not in the object itself but in the interplay of shadows, the light and dark created between objects." These luminaires are crafted using cutting-edge technology and human craftsmanship.
Issey Miyake states, "The expressions that light and shadow bring to a space in 'IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE' are a modern interpretation of the delicate nuances found in traditional Japanese lighting. I believe it is important to create products that anyone can use freely, with an awareness of the relationship between people and objects, and the space that emerges between them. We must not forget to think deeply with our minds and to create with our hands."
For the creation of the shades, the principles of three-dimensional modeling developed for "132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE" were employed, alongside the development of materials that offer excellent shape retention and carefully considered translucency.
