What Can Be Seen When All Color Information is Removed?
Regarding the "Playful Shadows" exhibition, Oki Sato commented, "Just as faint sounds become clear in the dark when all other noises are absent, removing all color information allows us to see things we might otherwise miss. I wanted visitors to experience nendo's work through this sensory world, reminiscent of the 'darkness of yokan' described in Junichiro Tanizaki's 'In Praise of Shadows'."
The "Playful Shadows" exhibition by nendo will feature approximately 50 products, including furniture, lighting, and interior accessories, none of which have been previously exhibited in Japan. The special venue will also display works centered on the color black, such as "thin black lines" (first shown in London in 2010) and "K%" (first shown at Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2012).
In the window displays and throughout the store, black mannequins will serve as a backdrop for new collections by emerging fashion designers, accompanied by "black furniture" from European brands like Cappellini and Moroso. Works will also be exhibited within box-like "display rooms" situated on the mannequins' heads.
